Cotswold Limestone Aggregate at Guiting Quarry, Gloucestershire

A range of first class graded Cotswold Limestone aggregates.

At our Guiting Quarry we offer a range of decorative aggregates, fill stone and drainage stone to suit a wide variety of construction projects. Not only do they offer versatility but their distinctive natural honey/buff colouring make these aggregates an extremely attractive touch to any landscaping project.

Also known as decorative stones or landscaping aggregates, decorative aggregates can be used to enhance the visual appeal of outdoor spaces and are extremely popular for gardens, footpaths and other landscaping projects where a functional but attractive surface is desired. Our decorative aggregates are available in 10mm and 20mm (clean) sizes.

Decorative aggregates from our Gloucestershire quarries

Our self-binding Goldpath is a blend of 10mm aggregate and dust mix. This is usually supplied with an equal measure of aggregate and dust mix, although a higher percentage of either stone or dust can be specified depending on your particular requirements. Goldpath can be levelled to provide a firm fine gravelled surface that is hard wearing and adds a touch of class to any landscaping or pathway project. Goldpath is suitable for footpaths, cycleways and walkways.

Decorative aggregates can also be used in water features, such as ponds and fountains or as ground cover in gardens and borders. As a material, it offers several advantages and possibly the most significant is its aesthetic appeal and ability to enhance outdoor spaces. With their own natural range of colour, shape and size, they bring texture, depth and character to any outdoor space.

Decorative aggregates are hard wearing and long lasting, making them ideal for high-use areas such as footpaths. They can also be used alongside paving stones or concrete, to create a unique design with different patterns. Resistant to fading, weathering and erosion, decorative aggregates maintain their appearance and durability over time, making them a cost-effective solution for domestic and commercial projects, not only offering aesthetic enhancements but also practical and functional benefits.

Unlike some surface finishes, decorative aggregates allow water to permeate through the stones which encourages drainage and reduces the risk of water pooling or runoff. This helps to prevent other issues like flooding and soil erosion. They require minimal maintenance and, when used in garden beds for example, help to suppress weed growth, therefore reducing the time and effort required to maintain them.

Drainage aggregates from our Gloucestershire quarries

Our Guiting and Oathill aggregates are also suitable for use as drainage stone. Being both coarse and porous, water is able to easily flow through the drainage aggregate, preventing the build-up of surface water which could potentially lead to flooding, causing significant damage. For this reason, our drainage stone is often used in the construction of sports fields, recreation grounds and golf courses where it helps to prevent waterlogging and preserve the conditions required for playing sport.

Our aggregates can be used with different types of drainage system, including French drains, as backfill material surrounding the perforated pipe. The stone allows water to enter the pipe and be carried away, while preventing soil and other debris from clogging the drainage system.

Drainage stone can also be used around septic tank systems, to facilitate the discharge of effluent matter from the tank into the surrounding soil. The stone acts as a filter, allowing the discharged matter to disperse into the ground and drain away.

Whatever the intended use, it is important to choose the appropriate size and grade of drainage stone to ensure that water can move through it efficiently and effective drainage is achieved. Our drainage stone is available in a range of sizes including 40mm Clean, 75mm Clean and 150mm Clean.

Fill stone aggregates in Gloucestershire

Fill stone, also known as fill material or fill dirt, is aggregate which is used to fill empty voids and level uneven ground. It can also be used to create a stable foundation in construction and landscaping schemes. It is a cost-effective solution that can be used for grading and levelling to prepare a site ready for construction as well as for backfilling, for example where a trench has been dug to lay underground utility pipes or cables. Our aggregates can also be used for landscaping, helping to form and shape the terrain ready for planting or installing hardscaping features.

It is important to properly compact and level fill stone to ensure stability and prevent settling over time. Depending on local regulations or the project requirements, ensure that the fill stone being used meets the required specifications and quality standards to ensure its suitability for the intended use.

Johnston Quarry Group supply significant quantities of aggregates to projects throughout Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire but with all of our aggregates we can arrange delivery nationwide, or if preferred, collection can be made from one of our quarries.
